One Season Wonders in Europe

Vishal Patra January 27, 2022

Many players try to do their best on the field when they are playing. Many players are successful in doing that and it also benefits them and the team they are playing in. But only few players can contain such a good run, and that’s why they are known as the best players. The players who are not able to carry their good form further are mainly known as one season wonders. There is quite a big list containing players who performed magnificently well in the first season but did not continue to play at the same level. Looking at some of the one-season wonders who made huge promises in a season but could not deliver in the following seasons.

Michu

The young Spanish player joined Swansea City from Rayo Vallecano in the summer of 2012. He gained the English side’s attention when he scored 15 goals for Rayo Vallecano in the 2011-12 season. His first season with Swansea was indeed a great one. He scored 18 goals in the league in his first season. First 15 goals came before the end of the first half and after Christmas he was only able to add 3 goals. This was an indication to the club of his dropping form.

In the following season, he was down due to injuries and then was only able to score 2 goals for them. After a disappointing season, he left the club and joined Napoli in 2015.

Robinho

The Brazilian sensation joined Man City from Real Madrid in 2008 when the club was taken over by Sheikh Mansour. He was signed for a record fee of £32.5 million then. Robinho made a promising start in the first season. He showed his worth by scoring 14 goals in his debut season for them in the league. This helped City to finish in the top half of the premier league table.

In the following season, his form completely faded. He only made 10 appearances and in which he did not score a single goal. This was a major disappointment not only for the player but also the club. This led to a loan move to Santos in Brazil. He was then sold to AC Milan.

Dani Guiza

The Spaniard made his name known in 2008 when he scored 27 goals for Real Mallorca. This feat was rewarded as the top scorer of La Liga in that season. It was pretty obvious that he had made a huge statement in Europe. His performance also earned him a place in the Spanish national team for the tournament Euro 2008 where he managed to score 2 goals. Many top clubs were behind his signature in the summer of 2008 but only Fenerbahce was successful in doing so.

He was not that successful with the Turkish club and dropped his form instantly. Over his spell at the club, he made almost 100 appearances and only managed to score 35 goals. This was not the club expected from him and later in the 2011-12 season headed back to his hometown Spain.
